O'Grady's parents have been Jim O'Grady who is a financial adviser and Jan O'Grady. Her parents raised her within Wheaton (Illinois) where she completed her studies in 1981 at Wheaton's North High School. The model was featured on several commercials for television before moving from Illinois to Los Angeles. O'Grady's early career was as model for Montgomery Ward model, where she also made several commercials. She appeared in 1988's romantic comedy, She's Having a Baby and was later cast as a recurring character in ABC comedy China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. Also, she appeared on several other shows, and was a part of made for television and independent movies. Her debut role on television was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC crime drama NYPD Blue. O'Grady, who played the big-haired secretary between 1993 and 1996, was awarded Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting actor. The actress was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award in 1995 for outstanding performance by an ensemble in an action show.
