O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early part of 2005, when she was still a high school student. Her performance on the show impressed jury, and she received a promotion to the final 100th stage. O'Neil received high praise by the judges. However, she experienced major losses during the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals as she fell to the lowest 3 and 2 spots respectively. Judges were shocked by the results and advised the audience to select contestants such as Melissa with the best singing abilities. O'Neil has been consistently giving stellar performances since then, never finished lower than the three top performers. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7,2005, where O'Neil was able to advance to the top two spots in the contest. Werner said that in the morning, newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil got a call from Canadian Premier Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol straight away.
