O'Neil was a student in high school when she took part in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. She was able to make it into the top 100 rounds after the judges praised her singing ability. O'Neil received high praise by judges, but she suffered substantial losses during the top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. The judges were astonished by the results and encouraged fans to vote for contestants with strong singing talents, like Melissa. O'Neil wasn't in the third place again following numerous outstanding performances. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil had defeated Goudie and became the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and youngest winner in the history of the show. O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
