O'Neil entered the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when he was still in highschool. The judges were impressed with her singing and she was able to advance to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was given high marks from judges. But she was a victim of massive losses during the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed in the bottom three, followed by the bottom two. The judges were shocked, and they recommended to the audience to choose Melissa as one of the contestants with the greatest singing abilities. O'Neil wasn't in the top 3 after a series of consistently outstanding performances. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil beat Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and the youngest winner in Idol history. O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
