O'Neil entered O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 while the singer was still in high school. The quality of her singing impressed judges, and so she was promoted to the final 100th stage. O'Neil won high praises from the jury. She was however a complete loser in both the top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were awed by her performance, and advised viewers to choose singers who were well-known like Melissa. O'Neil did not make it to the top 3 after numerous outstanding performances. The performance she gave on the 7th of September of 2005 was awe-inspiring that the judge Werner predicted the news headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie, becoming the 3rd Canadian Idol. O'Neil was contacted shortly after her win from Canadian Premier Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
