O'Neil was a student at high school when she auditioned in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. She advanced to the top 100 round since the judges were impressed by her vocal performances. O'Neil was given high marks by the judges. She suffered massive losses during the Top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up on the third row, as well as the second place. Judges were horrified by this and proclaimed to the public the fact that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil's performance was so consistent that he didn't fall in the third place. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7, 2005, when O'Neil was able to advance to the final two in the contest. Werner said that in the morning, the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became her third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil's Canadian Idol win was announced by President Paul Martin immediately.
